To a warmer clime

A five, six and seven year old,
Set off on a voyage (how bold!)
Their destination?
A warm, sunny nation
Like Africa -- "Germany's cold!"

Yahoo News 5/1/09: BERLIN – Three German children aged five, six and seven said they were fed up with cold weather at home set off on a voyage to Africa ("because it's so nice and warm there"). However, they got only as far as the local train station before being stopped by the police. Get the story here

Look ma, yummy samosas!

Buying samosas at 10,000 bucks?
Now by any con standard that sucks!
But when search for exotic
Turns tourists quixotic -
To swindlers they are sitting ducks!

NEW DELHI (Reuters) 17/11/08 – A Dutch couple on a visit to the famous cattle fair in Sonepur, Bihar, paid 10,000 rupees ($204) for four samosas, a spicy deep-fried snack that usually doesn't cost more than a few rupees, a newspaper reported on Monday. Get the story here

Aphrodisiac samosas? Have to give it to the vendor, he sure was witty! And those of you out there who expect exotica at every blink of an eye when in India, whatever you do, don't expect samosas to give you great sex...at the most, if they are too spicy for you ,they may give you an upset tummy!

:D

And for those of you who want to make them at home, so that you don't have to shell out that kind of money, you can check out this video:

Painted into a corner

In Jakarta, when trav'ling by rail,
Buy your tickets, you must, without fail,
And don't be a goof -
Don't sit on the roof,
Or they'll paint you, set cops on your trail!

Yahoo News 11/02/08: Indonesian commuters riding on the roofs of trains will be sprayed with colored liquid so that security officers can identify and arrest them, a report said Saturday. Get the story here

Souvenir that Columbus brought back

When the great Columbus sailed the seas,
The New World he discovered with ease.
In his zest to explore,
He then bedded a whore,
And thus brought back venereal disease!

Yahoo News 15/01/08: New study blames Columbus for syphilis spread. Get the story here

Inkspot is back!

Inkspot is back!

So many things have happened since I went on holiday... India won the Twenty20, Viswanathan Anand became the World Chess Champ, there was flare-up in Burma and back home the newly wed Rizwanur Rahman died a mysterious death... lots of catching up to do!

A reader sent in this note of welcome :

Holiday-minded Ms.Ray
Dared to venture harm's way -
She went with a smile
To the trouble-racked isle
And is back to write another day!

Well thank you dear reader. However, let me point out that Sri Lanka is safe for travel and is not as 'trouble-racked' as people generally view it to be. It is a beautiful country and worth visiting both for its natural beauty and cultural heritage.

Regular blogging will resume Monday onwards.

A matter of gravity

The Atlantis has come back to base,
Having finished its mission in space.
"I'll be wobbling a while,"
Said 'Suni' with a smile,
"For in gravity I'm out of place!"

The Hindu 24/06/07: Sunita Williams reunited with family, trying to get used to gravity. Get the story here

Does the Inca trail lead to Nepal? Not really!

As far as what I can recall,
We had boarded a flight to Nepal.
But out of the blue,
We landed in Peru,
Misguided by a poster on the wall!

Yahoo News 10/01/07: Royal Nepal Airlines has apologized to Peru after mistakenly using a photo of the Inca ruins of Machu Picchu to promote tourism in Nepal. Read about it here

I just realized that my friend Limerick Savant had already posted a lovely limerick on the same piece of news. Go, read
