There was a young lady in Cal,
Who remained very lonely, poor gal!
She wished Edward Lear
Was still living, and near,
She believed he would be her dear pal!
II
Tho' praise always is nice to hear,
Cannot take the full credit, I fear.
For the limerick beat,
Was the stupendous feat,
Of a man named Edward Lear!
12th May was the birth anniversary of Edward Lear - an artist, illustrator and writer known for his nonsensical poetry and his limericks, a form which he popularised.

An ode to Edward Lear
ReplyDeleteI
Let's write something each day,
Write anything any which way.
Write atleast one limerick a week
To keep our brain at its peak
And thus keep Alzheimer'at bay.
II
I write limericks for sheer pleasure
Ignoring meter n rhyme for good measure
Limericks, I feel are for enjoyment
And should'nt be objects of comment
Or be subject to publisher's pressure!
(I hope Edward Lear is'nt turning in his grave!!!)
If Edward Lear turns in his grave
ReplyDeleteHe appreciates you being brave
Toying with words
Unlike the nerds
Who spend all day playing it safe.
Thanks qbit! That's very encouraging.
ReplyDeletean interesting exchange, Padmaja and Qbit :-)
ReplyDeleteAnd Padmaja, keep writing and on reading it aloud, you will find that the rhythm follows naturally!
