Winds of change

In the absence of a suitable man
The tribe set aside a centuries-old ban
And proclaimed it cool
For a woman to rule
Then they elected a queen to head their clan!

The Telegraph, Calcutta 23/12/05 : The Great Andamanese defy custom and gear up to coronate first woman. Get the story here

Infact it would be great if it happens. But the news which appeared in few Indian newspapers that Great Andamanese have elected the queen as the leader of the tribe is not true.As on 16th Jan'2006, they still have to take a collective decesion regarding it.
Apart from this, the notion of hierarchy ilke King and Queen did not really exist in Great Andamanese society. Its another colonial implant in their culture when the 1st King was declared by the government in 1949.
